SSS 2024 Preliminary Program Now Available

We are happy to tell you that the preliminary program is now available here!

We would like to thank the members of the SSS2024 Program Committee – Aarushi Bhandari, Blu Buchanan, Felicia Casanova, Melanie Escue, Won-tak Joo, Nik Lampe, Braden Leap, Gabriela Leon-Perez, Corey Miles, Ugur Orak, Ryan Parsons, Elizabeth Rahilly, Kapriskie Seide, Jaclyn Wong, and Sam Yuan – for all the time and effort they spent carefully reading submitted abstracts and piecing them all together to form exciting sessions. And they did this task during one of the busiest times of year! We would also like to thank each of you who submitted your papers, posters, full sessions, workshops, panels, and author-meets-curious-readers sessions. The SSS2024 program, built around President Gayle Kaufman’s theme “Disrupting Binaries,” is truly SSSers’ collective work advancing sociology.

Please take a very close look at the program and notify us (program@southernsociologicalsociety.org) if you need corrections or updates (e.g., affiliations, typos, title changes, etc.) by January 31, 2024. After this date we will be unable to make changes to the final program. In accordance with SSS policy, we cannot honor special requests for dates or times of session. Thank you for your help in reviewing the draft program and for adhering to SSS policies.

The preliminary program is saved in a searchable PDF format; use the Ctrl+F function to search for your name. Also, if you organized a session, please communicate with your session participants to confirm their attendance and ask them to check the program for errors. As we get closer to the meeting, keep an eye on additional correspondence from the Executive Office, President Gayle Kaufman, and our Local Arrangements Chairs.

There will also be communication well before the conference for members to download and set up their accounts for the SSS 2024 Mobile App. There are no longer any physical programs or tote bags at SSS annual meetings; the Mobile App is the primary way for members to navigate the conference.

Registration and Hotel Reservations

Take advantage of the reduced registration and hotel costs by registering and booking early! To join, renew your dues, or check the status of your membership, log in to your SSS Member Portal. Book your room at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel using this link. Web-based reservations are preferred but you may also call (888) 627-7033 to reserve a room – simply mention that it is for the “Southern Sociological Society Annual Meeting”. The SSS conference rate is $239. Deadline for booking within the SSS Annual Meeting room block rate is March 14, 2024. However, the room block often fills up well before this cut-off date.

Membership Dues, Pre-Registration, and COVID-Protocols

Per SSS policy, all authors who appear on the program must be a current dues-paying member. Please pay your dues now so you can enjoy the full membership benefits of SSS all year. We also strongly encourage you to pre-register for the meeting. The cut-off date for pre-registration rates is March 1, 2024. Those who wait until after this date will have to register and pay dues on-site where the fees are higher. To renew your membership and register for the annual conference, visit our membership portal by clicking here.

All those attending SSS will be required to follow any COVID 19-related protocols mandated by local authorities at the time of the meeting. We strongly recommend that attendees receive a COVID-19 vaccination or booster in advance of the conference. Mask use is optional but encouraged. Please do your best to consider your own health and that of your colleagues. Depending on circumstances closer to our meeting in April, SSS Executive Committee may enact stricter protocols.
