Position Summary: The Department of Sociology and Criminology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminology (Health) to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.
This tenure-track Assistant Professor position entails conducting research leading to publication, engaging in creative and/or scholarly activities, designing graduate and undergraduate courses, developing and implementing new methods of teaching to reflect changes in the field, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, writing and administering exams, mentoring and evaluating students, creating interest and understanding among students, serving on various faculty- and student-oriented committees, providing service on campus an in related professional organizations, and participating in faculty governance in the department and on campus.
Preferred candidates should have research or teaching expertise in how race, ethnicity, and/or other interlocking forms of inequality (e.g., gender, social class, and sexuality) impact health. Applicants should also articulate how they can contribute to one or more areas of departmental strength in: inequality/stratification, community, criminology, and/or the emerging area of health. In addition, strong preference will also be given to candidates who can contribute to the department’s mission of diversity and inclusion.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the Department
The Department is a very dynamic, productive, collegial, and student success-oriented unit in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Criminology, and an M.A. in Sociology, and affiliation with three research units: and affiliation with three research units: the Center for Social Research, Community and Family Institute, and the Terrorism Research Center. The Department participates in African and African American Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, and other interdisciplinary area studies programs. The department contributes to the larger university strategic mission that is part of eight priority areas that have been outlined in detail in the Chancellor’s guiding priorities. Duties will include:
• 40% teaching
• 40% research
• 20% service
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate
• PhD in Sociology or a closely related social science field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment.
• An active research agenda that is health focused.
• Demonstrated commitment to mentoring undergraduate, honors, and/or graduate students, including serving on or directing thesis committees and senior papers, etc.
• Interest or experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or cross-campus collaborations.
• Research and teaching experience in the Sociology of Health.
• Demonstrated success working with underrepresented communities and diverse populations.
• Commitment to building an inclusive scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service.
• A record of successful publication and/or funding in the Sociology of Health.
• Commitment to, or experience in, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in independent research.
• Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
• Current knowledge and research experience in the field of Sociology of Health.
• Expertise in how race, ethnicity, racism, and/or other interlocking forms of inequality (e.g., gender, social class, and sexuality) impact health.
• Ability to contribute to departmental strengths.
• Contribute to the department’s mission of diversity and inclusion.
