Position Summary: The Department of Sociology and Criminology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Sociology to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.
This tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position entails conducting research leading to publication, engaging in creative and/or scholarly activities, designing graduate and undergraduate courses, developing and implementing new methods of teaching to reflect changes in the field, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, writing and administering exams, mentoring and evaluating students, creating interest and understanding among students, serving on various faculty- and student-oriented committees, providing service on campus an in related professional organizations, and participating in faculty governance in the department and on campus.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

About the Department
The Department is a very dynamic, productive, collegial, and student success-oriented unit in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Criminology, and an M.A. in Sociology, and affiliation with three research units: and affiliation with three research units: the Center for Social Research, Community and Family Institute, and the Terrorism Research Center. The Department participates in African and African American Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, and other interdisciplinary area studies programs. Duties will include:

  • 40% Teaching

Minimum Qualifications:
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • A Ph.D in Sociology or a closely related social science field conferred by the date of initial appointment.
  • Evidence of the ability to contribute to one or more areas of departmental strength in: inequality / stratification, criminology, community, and / or health.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and an active research agenda commensurate with rank.
  • A strong record of teaching and service commensurate with rank.
  • Evidence of a commitment to building an inclusive scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and/or service.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of intersectional scholarship that examine whether and how race, ethnicity, and/or other interlocking forms of inequality (e.g., gender, social class, and sexuality) shape outcomes in your respective fields are preferred.
  • A record of successful contract, grant, foundation, or other external funding.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or cross-campus collaborations.
  • Evidence of exceptional teaching and mentoring across modalities at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Experience building an inclusive scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and/or service.
