SSS and many of its members enjoy a strong professional relationship with other prominent societies such as Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) and its SWS-South Chapter. SSS welcomes members from diverse scholarly and personal backgrounds.

Membership in the Society runs from January 1 to December 31.

All annual conference participants must be current, dues-paying members of the Society.

Membership Options

Membership TypeAnnual CostMembership Description
Regular Membership$75A membership for persons holding a graduate degree in sociology or a related field.
Student Membership$30A membership for persons currently enrolled in a higher degree program who have not received a PhD. Includes undergraduates.
Unemployed or Contingent Membership$30A membership for persons who are currently unemployed or employed in a non-tenure track position.
Sustaining Membership$150A regular membership for those who can afford to support the Society at a higher rate. Sustaining members will be acknowledged at the annual conference with a designation on their conference badge and will have their name appear in the program.
Emeritus Membership$0Persons who have retired from regular employment, and have been regular members of the society for ten or more years. Please contact the Executive Officer for first time approval. Emeritus members wishing to receive Social Currents must pay a $25 fee.
BA/BS-Granting Departmental Membership$50Membership for a BA/BS-Granting Department of Sociology that supports the objectives of the Society. Departments will be listed in the annual meeting program, will receive Social Currents for their front office, and all undergraduate students from that department who present at the conference will have their annual dues waived (undergraduate conference registration fees still required).
MA/MS/AA-Granting Departmental Membership$100Membership for a MA/MS/AA-Granting Department of Sociology that supports the objectives of the Society. Departments will be listed in the annual meeting program, will receive Social Currents for their front office, and all undergraduate students from that department who present at the conference will have their annual dues waived (undergraduate conference registration fees still required).
PhD-Granting Departmental Membership$150Membership for a PhD-Granting Department of Sociology that supports the objectives of the Society. Departments will be listed in the annual meeting program, will receive Social Currents for their front office, and all undergraduate students from that department who present at the conference will have their annual dues waived (undergraduate conference registration fees still required).
Dues and Fees Lifetime Membership$4,000This covers membership dues and registration fees for all future membership years and annual meetings. An SSS member with a Dues and Fees Lifetime Membership never has to remember to renew their annual membership dues or their annual meeting registration fees- period!
Dues-only Lifetime Membership$2,500This covers membership dues for all future membership years. Members with this type of membership are required to pay annual meeting registration fees.
